Outdoor Adventure

The Outdoor Adventure Club meets approximately once a month outside of school. The club offers a variety of outdoor events such as skiing, hiking and rock climbing.

SkillsUSA

SkillsUSA-a national organization serving high school and college students which prepares students for careers in technical, skilled and service occupations. SkillsUSA currently has 266,000 members in 54 states and territories.

SkillsUSA provides educational and leadership activities designed to build leadership, teamwork, citizenship, and character development. It builds and reinforces self-confidence, work attitudes and communication skills. It emphasizes total quality of work, high ethical standards, superior work skills, life long education and pride in the dignity of work.

SkillsUSA also promotes involvement in community service. More than 1,000 business, industry and labor sponsors support SkillsUSA through financial aid, contributions, and direct involvement of their people in the various activities and events.

Drama Club

Welcome to the South Shore Vocational Technical School Drama Club!

The Drama Club meets Tuesdays and Thursdays after school in the Lecture Hall.  Mr. Bova, Mr. Savage, and Mrs. Smith are the faculty advisors for the Drama Club.Currently auditions are being held for the Annual Dinner Theatre Show.  This year The Taming of The Shrew  by William Shakespeare is the play. The dates for the Dinner Theatre are April 4,5,6.  Dinner will be served in the Brass Lantern Restaurant on April 5, and 6.The Club also will be participating in The Massachusetts State Drama Festival.  This will be in early March. At least 30 students have shown an interest in being involved with the Drama Club this year.  The Advisors welcome each and every student from SSVT to participate.  Acting is not the only role needed to be filled . Techies, prop people, and make-up artists are just a few of the openings that still need to be filled.

Student Government

The S.S.V.T. Student Council goals are:

  • To promote communication between the administration and the student body
  • To inform the administration and staff about the student body's activities, interests and concerns
  • To advise the administration as part of its decision-making process
  • To initiate and present proposals to the administration about issues important to the student body 
  • To teach the dynamics of a student run organization 
  • To promote the concepts of democratic decision making in the student body
  • To prepare students for increasing leadership responsibilities 
  • To increase student body participation in school functions and community involvement 
  • To be truly representative of the entire student body

National Honor Society

The National Honor Society at SSVT is reserved for those students who maintain a 3.5 GPA, and possess the values of good character, leadership and commitment to service. The students are eligible after the 2nd term of junior year. An induction ceremony is held each spring. Seniors and juniors are inducted at that time. A community service project is voted on each year, with individual "pet projects" considered. Membership must be maintained through the remainder of the student's program at SSVT. It is both an honor and a privilege to be part of the South Shore Vocational Technical High School National Honor Society.

Creative Writing

The Creative Writing Club: Home of Real Good Stuff is SSVT’s bi-annual student publication. The publication includes all genres of writing and encourages artists to submit work too! We meet B-Cycle Monday’s in room 106. We also meet in cyberspace. Maybe we’ll see you there!

Cross Country

The Cross Country Group meets for an hour after school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and welcomes students of all running ability levels. Each session consists of a thirty minute track workout that may include speed work, hills, or pacing, and then thirty minutes of general fitness, exercise and stretching. The Cross Country club plans to participate in local 5k races.

Pupil Services

Services are provided to assist our students to become successful citizens.  Services include Guidance, Special Education, School Nurse, Title I assistance and 504 accommodations.

Guidance Department - The guidance department provides the following services:

  • Recruitment, Admissions and Orientation for students interested in attending South Shore Vocational Technical High School
  • Guidance curriculum for all students – career decision making, career planning, academic counseling, post-secondary school planning and application process, job seeking and keeping skills, etc.
  • Student monitoring and counseling
  • Student support activities and groups
  • Scheduling and attendance monitoring
  • Cooperative Education placement

Staff

  • Pam Titus – Director of Pupil Services
  • Todd Zahurak – counselor – all 9th grade students, exploratory program and the 10th, 11th and 12th grade students in PMT, Automotive and Carpentry (Towns of Whitman, Abington and Non-town schools).  Mr. Zahurak also coordinates our students and the military recruiters.
  • Amy Dow – counselor – grades 10, 11 and 12 in the following shops: Auto Body, Culinary Arts, Cosmetology, HVAC and Metal Fabrication (Towns of Hanson, Rockland and Scituate).  Mrs. Dow is also in charge of our Career Plan activities and the Career Cruising program.
  • Joe Madera – counselor - grades 10, 11 and 12 in the following shops: CIT, Electrical, Drafting, Electronics, Graphic Communications, and Allied Health (Towns of Cohasset, Norwell and Hanover).  Mr. XXXXXXX also coordinates the college application process , and scholarships.

Special Education - The purpose of the Special Education Department is to provide educational support to meet the student’s needs as identified on the IEP.

Services

  • Academic support through resource room classes in all academic areas and academic inclusion classes
  • After school tutoring
  • Support for regular education and vocational instructors
  • Psychological and Educational evaluation and counseling
  • Speech and Language evaluation and therapy
  • Other specialties as needed

School Nurse Colette Worrall – Coordinates the health and safety of our students

TITLE I SERVICES - Title I programs provide support at all grade level to assist the students to meet the expectations and the learning standards of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.  Students are identified as Title I eligible based on their standardized test results, their MCAS results and their academic achievement.

Section 504  - Pam Titus – Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act is designed to insure access of disabled persons to education and other major life activities.
